Lt Gen Pushpendra Pal Singh Takes Charge as Western Command Chief of Indian Army

Lieutenant General Pushpendra Pal Singh has assumed command as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Indian Army’s Western Command on April 1, 2026. He succeeds Lieutenant General Manoj Kumar Katiyar, who retired on March 31 after completing his tenure.

An officer of the Parachute Regiment (Special Forces), Lt Gen Singh was commissioned into the 4th Battalion of the regiment in December 1987. He is an alumnus of the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, and Lucknow University.

With a career spanning nearly four decades, Lt Gen Singh has held a wide range of command and staff appointments. He has led formations in high-altitude and sensitive operational areas along both the Northern and Western borders. His operational experience includes participation in Operation Pawan and multiple tenures in counter-insurgency operations along the Line of Control and the International Boundary.

Before taking over as Vice Chief of the Army Staff, he served as Director General Operational Logistics at Army Headquarters, where he played a key role in enhancing operational mobility, logistics integration, and sustainment capabilities. As Vice Chief, he contributed to force structuring, capability development, and strengthening overall operational preparedness.

Lt Gen Singh has also attended the Defence Management Course at the College of Defence Management in Secunderabad and the Advanced Professional Programme in Public Administration at the Indian Institute of Public Administration. He holds a Master’s degree in Philosophy from Panjab University.

In recognition of his distinguished service and gallantry, he has been awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and two Sena Medals.

On assuming command, Lt Gen Singh reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining high operational readiness, promoting innovation, and ensuring the welfare and morale of personnel. Under his leadership, the Western Command is expected to continue focusing on multi-domain operations, induction of advanced technologies including drones and counter-drone systems, intelligence-driven operations, and infrastructure development, while maintaining coordination with civil administration.
